Lancôme, a subsidiary of L’Oréal, is a luxury makeup, fragrance, and skincare brand operating since the 1930s. Lancôme is a French company, and its headquarters are situated in Paris, France. It is a high-end brand and part of L’Oréal’s Luxury Products division. It caters to both men and women consumers. When it comes to selective perfumery, Lancôme is the leading French brand in the world. It is sold in over 163 countries and has at its heart the French values of beauty and elegance.
The Inspiration Behind the Brand
Armand Petitjean founded Lancôme in 1935 as a fragrance house. The name was inspired by the ruins of the castle, Le Chateau de Lancosme, and was intended to convey the French idea of elegance. The roses growing around the castle eventually gave birth to the global symbol of the brand, a single golden rose. The rose symbolizes the French idea of beauty and represents the most gentle and luxurious perfumes.
Lancôme launched five fragrances in 1935, which were presented by Petitjean in the Universal Exhibitions at Brussels. The fragrances, Conquête, Kypre, Tropiques, TendresNuits, and Bocages, were packaged in beautiful bottles and captured the scents of multiple cultures. These five fragrances won a double medal at the exhibition. Petitjean had employed Georges Delhomme as the creative director of Lancôme, and it was he who came up with the unique and ornate packaging of the fragrances. Fragrances have often been the first product used to launch a company, as you can read here.
In 1936, Petitjean stepped into the skincare market with his product La Nutrix. Nutrix was introduced as an all-purpose repair cream. It was a regenerating night cream used for treating sunburn, cracked skin, insect stings, razor burns, frostbite, and diaper rashes. Nutrix, a nutrient cream, was introduced as having the ability to guard the skin by enhancing the skin’s defensive mechanisms. The cream was a huge success; it became an icon and is popular among customers, even today.
Rose de France was launched in 1936. This pinkish-red lipstick was scented by roses and was silky, soft, and luxurious. At a time when long-lasting lipsticks were in fashion, Petitjean went against the current and introduced the soft and luxurious Rose de France. The lipstick gave the lips a smooth, youthful feel and soon became the symbol of femininity. Like the perfumes, the lipsticks were also encased in ornate cases. They remained a best seller until the 50s. Read here about why luxury lipsticks have always been so popular.
When Lancôme’s sales started to go down during WWII, Petitjean came up with a unique idea for promoting his company. He hand-picked students and gave them a thorough training in science, arts, and the strategies used in selling, taught them makeup and massage techniques, and even gave a course in perfumery. These girls became his international ambassadors and promoted Lancôme all over the world. They were received by heads of states and governors and were able to secure orders for the company.
In years after the war, Lancôme continued to grow. Its skincare line became a huge success among women, and its popularity was mostly due to word of mouth. Lancôme’s lipsticks were extremely popular, and Magieand Tresor earned the brand prestige in the world of perfumery. By 1955, Lancôme’s products were being sold in over 98 countries.
Petitjean had always emphasized quality. Ironically, this was one of the reasons that contributed to his company’s downfall. His new line, Oceane, was too complicated and based on a problematic system of classifying skin types, and so did not work out. Petitjean also rejected the idea of disposable lipstick cases, which was to revolutionize makeup sales, and so his lipstick sales were severely affected. Around the same time, Petitjean poured his fortune, and that of Lancôme, into constructing a production plant at Chevilly.
By 1962, the plant was constructed, but Lancôme was heavily in debt. After trying and failing to adjust the brand to the market, the company was sold to L’Oréal in 1964, with the promise that the Lancôme heritage would be preserved.
Under the L’Oréal Group
Lancôme grew quickly and spread far into the world under L’Oréal. L’Oréal’s deep pockets and its marketing knowledge helped ensure that Lancôme not only survived but also thrived. The brand has retained its essence as a subsidiary of the L’Oréal group. The French ideals of elegance and beauty are still the cornerstones of its identity, and the spirit of innovation has reached its pinnacle under L’Oréal’s laboratory discoveries.
Successes such as O oui, Poeme, and Tresor have retained the brand’s status as a great perfume house. In the luxury beauty arena, Lancôme is one of the biggest advertisers in the world. It is working with top-notch photographers, models, and actresses. It is represented globally by perfumers, designers, actresses, and supermodels. It is growing continually, and in 2017, it introduced a new app that allowed customers to virtually try on makeup products and make purchases through the app.
