Laura Mercier Cosmetics is a skincare and cosmetics company founded by Laura Mercier in 1996. Today, it is a subsidiary of Shiseido Company, Limited. The luxury brand is headquartered in New York and is known for its high-quality products and its focus on creating the ‘flawless face.’
About the Founder
Laura Mercier was born in Provence, Paris in 1960.Her birth name wasMichèle, which she later changed to Laura to avoid being confused with the French actressMichèle Mercier. Her initial passion was art, painting and drawing, and at 16, Laura moved to Paris to attend an art school called ÉcoleDuperré. However, after three years at the school, she decided to switch careers, as art wasn’t a viable career option in those days, and she was afraid of ending up as a starving artist.
She enrolled in the Carita Beauty Institute, to learn about the aesthetics of beauty and skin. Thus, she made the transition from painting canvases to painting faces. At the school, she met the makeup artist ThibaultVabre, who was teaching at the institute. She started working as an assistant for him after graduating. When she had worked for him for a year and a half, she went on to doing shoots on her own. For six years, she worked as a makeup artist for magazines, as well as taught makeup artistry.
In the 80s, there were a lot of outdoor shoots, and Laura learnt to adapt her makeup techniques, so it didn’t look heavy on the skin. She became an expert in creating the appearance of the perfect natural skin on camera.
In 1985, she moved to New York and had to start from scratch, since things weren’t so international back then. She had to find an agent and learn how artists worked in America. Her first project was as part of a team responsible for launching the American version of Elle. As a freelance makeup artist, she worked with renowned photographers like Patrick Demarchelier, Irving Penn, and Steven Meisel, and learnt to do makeup in different lights, themes, and on different personalities.
Laura Mercier always had a distinct European style of makeup. She preferred the lighter and more natural makeup look. In the nineties, with the trend of minimalism, the lighter, more natural look started to be in demand, and Laura, who had by then a reputation for the natural look, was quite popular. In her freelance career as a makeup artist, she worked with celebrities who had noticed her work in editorials. Her A-list celebrity clientele included Mariah Carey, Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Celine Dione, and Madonna. She stayed on as Madonna’s personal makeup artist for eight years. She also worked for Glamour, Allure, and InStyle.
About the Brand
As a makeup artist, she knew exactly which products were missing from the market. She knew about the ideal product texture and was eager and passionate to mix and make colors. She knew the big brands were out of touch with what was going on at the ground level in the makeup and fashion industry, and that makeup artists often led the way in product innovations. Being highly self-aware, she realized that she was an artist at heart and had no talent for starting or building a business.
Collaborating with Janet Gurwitch, she started her own brand. Janet provided the investment, and Laura brought the concepts for unique products and was directly involved in the product-making process. Thus, Laura Mercier Cosmetics was born in 1996, and it quickly became very successful. It provided high-quality makeup products that looked natural on the skin and went with all skin tones and types.
The brand was based upon the philosophy that every woman is uniquely beautiful, and that makeup should serve to enhance the individual features that are already there, so women can feel more comfortable in their skin. It believes in making women look as beautiful as possible, while still looking like themselves.
In 2015, it was estimated that Laura Mercier made $165 million in net sales. In 2016, Shiseido Americas Corporation acquired Laura Mercier. Since then, Laura Mercier has been incorporated into its unique strategy of increasing its footprint in high-end makeup. At the time, Laura Mercier was doing well in the US, the UK, Thailand, and Korea. Overall, it was present in 34 countries. Shiseido saw a global potential in the brand, and especially in Europe and Asia. Laura Mercier keeps an active involvement with the brand and is part of product development and the creative direction of the brand.
