So what could you be doing to save money on your energy bills?

Energy efficient living is good for the planet and good for your bank balance too. We take a look at ways you can save.

Energy Efficient Living Tips

There are lots of ways to save money on your energy bill. From mindful thinking to proactive savings, here are our top tips for saving the planet and spending less money.

Layer Up

The most obvious thing you can do is to turn your thermostat down and pop on a jumper and some slippers.

Of course, you shouldn’t be left shivering, but staying active and putting on extra layers should be the first step before turning up the thermostat.

Even lowering your thermostat by 1 degree could make a huge difference to your bills.

Update Your Lights

Switching to energy efficient light bulbs will also save you energy. LED lightbulbs use less energy and last longer, so you have don’t have to buy new ones as often!

Be Mindful, Use Less

Another obvious option but something we are all guilty of forgetting. Here are the most common things you can do which will save energy:

  • Turn off lights when you leave the room or when it’s bright outside
  • Stop using standby – you can turn it off in the settings of some TV’s
  • You can turn appliances off at the switch to stop those using standby too
  • Don’t leave the heating on when you’re not home
  • Stop plugging your phone in to charge overnight

Use the Power of the Sun

In the winter, if it’s sunny outside, keep your curtains and blinds open and let the heat in!

Equally, in the summer when you’re trying to keep cool, consider keeping blinds and curtains closed on windows with direct sunlight. This keeps the heat out and reduces your AC use, saving energy.

Switch to Solar Power

Speaking of the power of the sun, did you know the cost of solar panels has fallen a whopping 99% since 1977?

We have an excess of solar energy waiting to be harnessed. Consider a solar company to install panels on your home.

Close Your Doors

Changing the temperature in a large open space takes a long time. If you keep your doors closed, spaces become smaller and easier to heat or cool down.

Stop Running the Tap

Don’t forget you have to pay for your water too. Try not to leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, or start the shower before you actually intend to get in.

If you have a garden that needs watering, consider a water butt to collect rainwater and use that instead of sprinklers or a hose.
